Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Partner with site teams to provide financial oversight throughout the construction lifecycle
- Work closely with Project Managers to establish project budgets and oversee forecasting, job cost reporting, change orders, budget transfers, and cost reallocations across multiple active developments
- Oversee invoice review, approvals, and processing across the portfolio, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with internal controls
- Lead complex cost-sharing and financial analyses for multi-party developments, presenting recommendations to internal and external stakeholders
- Establish the financial framework for new developments, including budgets, tender analyses, award documentation, and project cost structures
- Oversee the monthly progress draw process, reviewing funding packages and supporting documentation before submission to lenders and cost consultants
- Coordinate with project teams, consultants, lenders, and executive management to secure timely funding approvals and payment releases
- Manage the weekly batch payment approval process to ensure project cash flow and vendor payments remain on schedule
- Oversee the financial administration of construction insurance, holdback releases, project close-outs, and other key financial controls
- Lead month-end reporting, reconciliations, forecasting, and financial analysis for active construction projects
- Analyze project costs, trends, and variances, identifying root causes and providing actionable recommendations to improve project performance
- Develop and maintain dashboards, reporting tools, and cost trackers that provide real-time visibility into project financial performance
- Serve as a trusted business partner to senior construction and finance leadership on budgets, forecasts, risks, and commercial decisions
- Develop and enhance financial models, reporting tools, and automation initiatives, including the practical application of AI to improve efficiency and decision-making
- Standardize and continuously improve construction accounting processes, document controls, and reporting practices across the portfolio
- Partner with construction and accounting teams to streamline workflows for tendering, contracting, invoicing, and cost management
- Maintain and enhance corporate templates, financial tools, and construction management frameworks that support consistent project execution
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Construction Accountants responsible for the day-to-day financial execution of active construction projects
- Review key deliverables to ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality before submission to lenders, consultants, partners, and senior leadership
- Train project teams on financial processes, reporting requirements, and project controls to strengthen financial discipline across the organization
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence within the Construction Accounting team
The Ideal Candidate
- University degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- 5+ years of progressive experience in construction accounting, project accounting, management accounting, or development finance, ideally on large-scale residential projects
- CPA designation preferred, ideally with public accounting or audit experience at a recognized firm
- Experience leading, mentoring, and developing junior team members
- Working knowledge of Ontario construction industry practices, including progress draws, holdbacks, and the Construction Act, is an asset
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage large volumes of financial data
- Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and present financial information to senior leadership and external partners
